The hearing loss may be due to many different causes. The most frequent is wax obstruction but any kind of recurrent otitis can produce it.
It is mainly important in children in whom may cause middle ear effusion otitis, usually seen in upper respiratory infections o with enlargement of the adenoids , togehter with delay of language learning and chronic otitis. Otherwhise children can show sensorineural hearing loss, difficult to detect but also important to treat to avoid its long-term consequences.
In adults most common causes of hearing loss are excessive noise, the auditory degeneration related to age (presbyacusis) and otosclerosis, a disease caused by an alteration in the ear ossicles, which treatment is surgical
