The Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal passages that causes nasal mucus, sneezing and nasal obstruction. Usually from a viral infection (common cold) or allergic to any environmental component as pollen, dust mites or hair of pets. In other cases a specific cause is identified (idiopathic rhinitis), is due to an immune disorder (intrinsic) or use of certain medications (nasal spray decongestants, antihypertensive drugs, contraceptives,…).
Persistent rhinitis may involve enlargement of the nasal turbinates, structures inside the nose used to heat and humidify the air we breathe. In these patients medical treatment of nasal corticosteroid sprays are recommended. When the size of these nasal turbinates blocks the nose it may be required Turbinate surgery, that usually consists of a reduction of size by using laser or radiofrequency.
When inflammation involves the sinuses of the nose is called Sinusitis and it carries pain or heaviness in the head or face, alteration of smell and cough.
Most patients respond to treatment with general measures and medications, but sometimes surgery is necessary: Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.
